Moving to Austin: With Kids

Are you relocating to Austin with kids and have no idea where to start looking! I've got you! Austin native here, single mom of two, and I KNOW this city and all the hidden gems that moms, and dads, look for. Lets chat 'hoods!

Hyde Park

This is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Austin for families. I lived here when my boys were age two and we LOVED it! If walkability is important to you, Hyde Park is a great spot. We walked to Central market Playground, parks behind campus with play areas and swings, and theres plenty of creeks for mud play and clibing trees. A short drive away is Pease Park complete with splash pads and playgrounds and Children's Discovery Center is a preschool lovated off 41st Street (also close to Quacks Bakery, yum). This area of Austin is not only full of beautiful historic charm, but it's conveniently located between both the medical center and UT so theres plenty of coffeehouses, bars, restaurants, boutiques and  places to hang. Easy access to Mopac AND I-35 makes your commute to work easier if yo'ure a working parent.

East Austin/Mueller

I loved living in Mueller too. Mueller backs up to Airport Dr and Manor which boasts some of Austin's favorite local bars and restaurants, but families love the fact they can walk to the duck pond, Mueller Farmer's Market, Alamo Drafthouse, one of THREE playgrounds, numerous parks, ice cream shops, and of course, the Thinkery (interactive children's museum). In my personal opinion, there's no better place in Austin for young families to live than Mueller. Also, theres Austin Discovery School and a few spanish immersion preschools conveniently located nearby.

South Austin

Whether you're looking for a gem in Travis Heights or Bouldin with that unique "Austin" look, or you prefer a big house with a yard in the suburbs of Circle C where you can easily meet other families, south Austin has so many great places for families to explore. The Wildflower Center has a HUGE children’s area I frequent often with my boys, but it's also a great place to go for a stroller stride or a run on the weekends. The Austin Waldorf School, Austin Montessori, Austin Childrens Garden, or Starbright School are ALL in south Austin so you'll have great options to choose from for childcare and preschool. Plus, south Austin features hot districts for nighttime fun and foodies like Soco, S Lamar and S First neighborhoods. Be sure to visit Tupac at Sugar Mamas Bakeshop, lol.

North Austin

Theres a rivalry between northies and southies in Austin. Mostly due to traffic issues, northies don't hang much with southies, lol. But, if you do find yourself in north Austin because that's where you prefer to work and play, you've got easy access to the Domain and Rock Rose District, the Arboretum, and some really great play-based preschools and immersion schools. Be sure to check out the splash pad at the Quarry in Cedark Park, the waterpark in Pflugerville, and get the fried pickles at Juniors in downtown Round Rock after playing at the "Park for All Abilities"!
