Family Friendly Coffeehouses in Austin
Whether you're an Austin native, or new to the city, finding a place to chill and hold an adult conversation is often harder than it seems. As a single mom to twins, I know the struggle! I've comprised a list of my favorite coffeehouses I frequent with my kids.
Located in South Austin, the Hive is a coworking space for working moms, ladies who lunch, or stay-at-home moms who just need a break! Wifi, breakfast tacos and childcare? Yes, please. Theres not only a toy room, but there's a playground outside and often events to help moms meet moms.
Central Market, N Lamar
This place is my personal favorite. It's huge and features an outdoor deck, playground, duck ponds, climbing trees, turtles to feed, and squirrels for kids to chase. Whether you want an iced coffee on a hot summer morning or a glass of rose while the sun is setting, Central Market is a hot spot for busy mamas. It's nestled in one of my favorite neighborhoods for growing families. Hyde Park is full of hidden gems for active kiddos.
Brentwood Social House
My kids call this the "pirate ship" and no, its not a pirate ship coffeehouse, but they do, in fact, have a pirate ship playground out back for kids. This was once an old historic home flipped into the perfect meeting spot for friends and coworkers with kids! The playground is awesome, but if its raining, dont fret- there's a playroom to the left and down the hall with a toy kitchen and a train table. You can pack snacks for the littles, but definitely plan to try their baked goods and savory treats!
We love to go to Radio Coffee in the '04 on Sunday mornings. The migas tacos from the Veracruz food truck is practically famous, but my favorite part of this place is the big treee and yardspace for kids to play with one another safely and/or meet all the neighborhood dogs!
Parents, mark your calendars for the Sunday mornings when childrens songwriter and singer, Stacy Gray is performing. Kids rush the stage like The Beatles are performing during the "bubble song" and the fenced in yard allows mom and dad to relax with a lavendar cappucino or knock out the t-do list growing in their onbox. Cherrywood is a fabulous neighborhood for growing families with plenty of parks and playrgrounds to explore!
Last, but certainly not least is Cosmic Coffee. My kids could play here for hours so I usually bring a bag full of toys and my laptop. Its perfectly acceptable to start a tab for drip coffee at the bar and tell the bartender to "keep 'em coming"! This place features a fenced in yard, herb garden, waterfalls, chickens, coy fish pond, and three food trucks with fabulous options! Off Pickle Street and S Congress near the 290 feeder. (21 and up during covid restrictions)
I have lived in Austin for fifteen years and am a single working mom of twin four year olds. Trust me, finding spots for kids to play while mom gets her head straight is a hidden talent. Let me help you find the neighborhood for your growing family that not only meets the needs of the kids, but both parents!
